Nexus press and Ursus Books - Chelsea
are pleased to present Photographs and prints from Keep Coming Back
by Julia clinker

Julia Clinker is the recipient of the 2001 Nexus Press International
Residency Award. Her documentary book is a critical portrayal of the coal
industry and its continued domination over the land and lives of the people
in West Virginia. From 1993 to 2000 Clinker photographed in the mines,
union halls, churches, black lung clinics, and peoples homes. She offers a
poignant and multifaceted view of a place still exploited by an industry
that reaps huge profits without regard for the health and safety of the
miners or the environment it is destroying.

Because you can't refuse the call of your homeplace.

Strangers don't know you and have little reference for understanding it
except in stereotypes or pity, so you are afraid of your tongue. It's twang
gives it away that you are not from here but one of those that crawled out
and up into America.

 - This is a story of West Virginia.
