In Toledo, many years ago, we sent a mailbag to the director who then passed it on to other curators. It was often two or three weeks before we got things back and there was always the possibility that an item got pulled to be read in greater depth. Not a good plan. We needed an alternative.

We then developed a table in the back of the library where we put new periodicals and recently processed books and catalogues. Materials were switched off every Monday. That way, staff could get first look at what was new.

Ten years ago, when we moved into our new library, which includes a study for faculty and curators, we included shelves for the same purpose. It is up to the staff to find their way over to see things (only a few do on a regular basis), and the materials are there for library staff to refer to. This seems to work.
