Here is the summary some asked me to post: Of the 14 institutions who responded the overall consensus was periodicals should not/do not circulate (for reason of the obvious headaches). However, many acknowledged the good will earned for the library by taking the time to provide some kind of periodical service. --Two institutions circulated periodicals to staff in a traditional routing system. For those who didn't circulate, each had its own system to alert staff to the new periodicals and provide information: *Circulate a photocopy of the table of contents to each division *Have staff members sign up to receive a photocopy of the toc for specific titles. *Distribute general email list of new arrivals (some with highlights, some with summaries, others with links) *Send email of new arrivals to staff members who have signed up to receive notification for certain titles. *Circulate single issues/photocopies of articles on demand *Send staff photocopies of articles requested after seeing the toc *Allow staff to check out individual periodicals *Allow bound volumes to be checked out Many many thanks to all who responded. It was most helpful.
