For the information of those who may be interested, as it is not very often
that we have materials published on New Zealand Architecture.

NEW ZEALAND ARCHITECTURE BOOKS

It is with immense pleasure that we would like to offer you these four new
books, all written and researched by New Zealanders. This does not happen as
often as it should and we hope you support them in the usual manner.

Guide to Central Auckland Architecture by Errol Haarhoff - NZ$39.95
112 pages, 25.5 x 13.5 cm, black & white, paperback Published by Balasoglou
Books

A long time coming, this is the first guidebook ever published on Auckland
architecture in 150 years of its existence. It has been exceptionally well
received by everyone who has seen it. In an easy-to-carry form it features
85 of Auckland's most respected commercial, civic, public and university
buildings. Buildings covered are from Auckland's earliest time such as the
Albert Barracks Wall in the early 1880s right up to the present represented
by the award winning St Peter's College by Architectus. Each building
receives a full-page; one black & white photograph and text. All pages are
indexed and referenced to a map so that readers can easily identify where
the buildings are located. Auckland's two Schools of Architecture - Auckland
University and Unitec, collated the information for the book. The text has
been thoroughly researched and written by Errol Haarhoff, Head of School,
University of Auckland, School of Architecture. This an absolute must for
everyone who is interested in New Zealand architecture. It is a great gift,
ideal for your glove compartment and an essential addition to your library

Moments of Resistance by Mark Taylor, Julienna Preston, Andrew Charleson -
NZ$30.00
101 pages, 20 x 21.5 cm, black & white, paperback Published by Archadia
Press, Nov 2002

This is a beautifully put together little book that promises to make a
valuable contribution to architecture in New Zealand. Co-authored by Mark
Taylor, Julienna Preston and Andrew Charleson of Victoria University of
Wellington (with essays by Gervork Hartoonian and Michael Ostwald), work in
this volume announces a project of resistance pertinent to a post-colonial
situation. The work presents a double-edged strategy: it revisits the
tradition of modern architecture with the contingencies of a given text and
yet, unlike the postmodernists of the 1980s, the work underlines the
tectonic potentialities of that same tradition. Grafting local construction
techniques onto the body of a transplanted modern architecture, the project
outlined in this book responds to the call for the preservation of cultural
heritage in Wellington, where contemporary buildings have been embellished
in the language of the so-called 'International Style.' Seismically
upgrading buildings that are at the risk of earthquake attack, the fine
drawings, models and essays in the book describe the thematic of a critical
practice. Their work touches on and
addresses cultural and political conditions brought to the surface by
post-colonial conditions.

Piglet the Great of Karaka Bay by Tony Watkins - $25.00
40 pages, 260 x 200 mm, paperback. Published by Balasoglou Books

While not strictly an architecture book, it is a gem all architects must buy
for their children, grandchildren, nieces & nephews, godchildren and even
just to have in your collection. Piglet the Great includes 33 full colour
photographs of Karaka Bay and Piglet. The text is by Tony Watkins, an
architect, urban planner and lecturer at the School of Architecture, the
University of Auckland, and the owner of Piglet. Children will enjoy the
photographs and story in this book,
while academics and parents will enjoy its sub-plot of sustainability.
Environmentalists will enjoy the book for its celebration of New Zealand
vernacular. Piglet is New Zealand's best known pig. She has made numerous
television appearances and graced the front page of both the New Zealand
Herald and Sunday Star Times. She is also well known internationally and has
appeared on television in Japan, Australia, USA and Asia. This is delightful
book that will have strong appeal for children and adults.

Lighting by Design by Christopher Cuttle - $204.95
212 pages, 190 x 255 mm, hardback. Published by Architectural Press

This is an extremely interesting book, written by Chris Cuttle, senior
lecturer in architectural technology, School of Architecture, University of
Auckland. It is a practical guide structured around a new theoretical
approach to the design of lighting for architectural spaces.Architects and
students will benefit from his holistic approach to the lighting process,
combining technical information with a distinctive design theory. Cuttle
begins with the development of observational skills, leading to the ability
to visualise architectural spaces in light. The final stage of realising the
lighting concept involves application of calculational procedures to develop
a technical lighting specification. The text includes practical advice on
meeting design specifications and contractual obligations. This is a
technical book, not a picture one but for those who take lighting seriously,
and as a science, it is essential. It has been a huge seller overseas and
the first print-run has been sold out, so expect some delays in delivery.

We are very pleased to have so many new books from New Zealand on
architecture. As usual you can email back your order with contact details.
We send the book, post-free anywhere in New Zealand and you pay by cheque
(or WE NOW TAKE VISA AND MASTERCARD).
