If Columbia figures can help you here they go: We have been keeping track of all costs (salaries, utilities, etc.) on an annual basis, and then divide them by the total number of volumes processed. The last figure I have handy is for March 2001, and it is $50.86 per volume. For all our space planning we have been using a figure of 11 volumes per linear foot. So if you multiply our cost per volume by our number of books in a linear foot you get $559.46 per foot of books. Cataloging is expensive, perhaps the most expensive thing libraries do...but it is what distinguishes a library from a warehouse.
