Kathleen McCarthy, author of Women's Culture: American Philanthropy and Art,
1830-1930, discusses women's patronage of the arts. McCarthy is Director of
the Center for the Study of Philanthropy. The program is sponsored by the

The Rise of the Professional Woman Artist in Russia

Learn about the rich and important contributions that women artists made to
Russian cultural life in this lecture with Rosalind P. Blakesley, lecturer
in the history of art and fellow of Pembroke College, University of
Cambridge. Blakesley examines the gradual appearance of women artists in
Russia, from the foreign artists who established successful careers
portraying members of the Russian court in the late 18th century to later
women who achieved recognition at the Imperial Academy of Arts.
