Someone on the list wanted info on the value of art. That need may be
past, but in light of events in Iraq, this book may be of interest.

_Art and Freedom_ by E.E. Sleinis (Urbana, University of Illinois Press,
2003) ISBN:0-252-02777-9

p.1 "Unless art delivers values that life without art cannot, it is
pointless."

p.2 "...art furnishes recast presentations of the outer world to
conscious awareness, it furnishes recast presentations of the intter world
to conscious awareness, and it also furnishes novel, world-independent
presentations to conscious awareness."

p.2 "The point of art is perplexing in ways that the point of science or
morality is not."

p.3 "Art's unique relationship to freedom compared with science and
morality is worth noting."

p.4 "The three core features of the art enterprise are that it fosters
freedom, it creates objects that command, sustain, and reward
contemplation, and it fosters and enlarges the inner life of individuals."
