Thanks to Bonnie Cawthorne at U of Maryland and Gisèle Guay from the Canadian Center for Architecture for discovering the answer to my query! The women are the Moody sisters (Brenda, Wilma, Harriet and Mildred). They apparently designed homes in CA resembling cottages illustrated in English fairy tales. For those who said they wanted the info once found, the article appears in Victoria magazine: v.3, no.2, April 1989. Many thanks to all who replied.
