        The Modern History and Literature program at Drew University announces a
public lecture:


                        BARBARA HOCHMAN

                         will speak on

          VISUAL POWER IN UNCLE TOM'S CABIN 1850-1890:
                   ILLUSTRATIONS IN HISTORY

        Prof. Hochman teaches literature at Ben Gurion University in Israel.  She
has published widely on nineteenth- and twentieth-century American
literature.  Her most recent book is "Getting at the Author: Reimagining
Books and Reading in the Age of American Realism" (University of
Massachusetts Press).

        This event is free, open to the public, and handicapped-accessible.
