Dear Barbara,
One step you should take is to get in touch with the Visual Resources
Association (www.vraweb.org), whose members' specialty is managing
images, cataloging them, and making them accessible.

The VRA Data Standards Committee has a lot of information available on

cataloging images. The VRA Core categories is a set of elements used
for cataloging images. The Core can also be found on the VRA web
site, with explanation about the Core.

There are guidlines for cataloging objects and images of objects that
is underway - Cataloging Cultural Objects and Their Images - sponsored

by the VRA, the Getty, and the Digital Library Federation. These
guidelines will be presented in a workshop at the upcoming VRA
conference in Houston (April 7-12). The guidelines are being written
to show people how to create authority files, how to use controlled
vocabularies, and how to select, describe, and format data.

I suggest you look at the VRA web site, and contact any of the members

of the Data Standards Committee for more information.

Cheers,
Ann Whiteside
