3:00 p.m. -5:00 p.m.- AASL Registration

The AASL registration desk will be set up next to the ACSA registration area, lst floor, Seelbach Hotel.

 

5:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. - Hotel Tour

Tour of the Seelbach Hotel with Larry Johnson, lobby concierge.

Mr. Johnson will tour us through the public areas of this historic hotel and discuss significant events in the hotel's history.

 

6:00 p.m.- Dinner in the Oak Room, Seelbach Hotel

AASL members are invited to meet their colleagues for an early dinner at Louisville's premier restaurant. We will be selecting from the hotel's $20 pre-theater menu, which includes an appetizer, entrée and dessert. Drinks, tax and gratuity are extra.

Pick up your registration packets and join AASL meeting attendees for an informal breakfast. Coffee, tea and a light, cold repast will be provided.

9:10 a.m.- 10:30 a.m. AASL Business Meeting

Jacque Tygart, AASL President and the AASL Board will convene the business meeting.

The agenda will be posted on the web site and provided on site to meeting attendees.

 

10:30 a.m.-10:45 a.m.- Break

 

 10:45 a.m.- 11:30 a.m.- The Small Town Center at Mississippi State University and the Architecture Library's role in its development- Emilie White

Emilie White is the Architecture Librarian at Mississippi State University. She will share with us information about the Library's expanding role in the Small Town Center. Begun in 1979, the Small Town Center functions as a resource center and uses design principles to discover assets of small towns that will enhance growth and development.

 

11:30 a.m.- 12 noon-.AASL Open Forum

Have questions you want to ask colleagues? Have announcements including new projects you want to share with AASL members? Bring them here.

 

12 noon- 1:00 p.m. - Lunch

Lunch on own. A list of area restaurants will be included in the registration packets. 

 

We may be offering AASL members the opportunity to view a film on Sam Mockbee and the Rural Studio. This event could take place at noon and may impact slightly on the AASL late morning schedule. 

 

1:00 p.m.- 1:45 p.m.- " The Charette Digital Project: An Historic Pittsburgh Architectural Journal Goes Online" - Martin Aurand

Martin Aurand is the archivist and Architecture Librarian at Carnegie Mellon University. The author of a number of publications including a guide to Pittsburgh architecture and The Progressive Architecture of Frederick G. Scheibler Jr., Martin will discuss and demonstrate Carnegie Mellon's new digital architecture project.

 

1:45 p.m.- 2:10 p.m.- "Converting a traditional architecture research guide to a Web-based Research FAQ"- Margaret Culbertson

Margaret Culbertson, AASL Secretary/Treasurer, is Head Librarian of the William R. Jenkins Architecture and Art Library at the University of Houston and author of Texas Houses Built by the Book and American House Designs: An Index to Popular and Trade

Periodicals, 1850-1915.

 

2:10 p.m.- 2:35 p.m. "An Anthology of Building Technology: the Field Condition"-

Barbara Opar

Barbara Opar, Architecture Librarian at Syracuse University Library and AASL Vice President, will demonstrate Syracuse University's first e-book, a collaboration between the Library's Fine Arts Department and the School of Architecture.

 

3:00 p.m- 4:00 p.m. Humana Building Tour

Anthony Choate will tour AASL members through the Humana Building, a major work

by acclaimed architect, Michael Graves.

Visitors' badges are required, so please indicate on your registration form whether or not

you will be attending this tour.

 

4:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. Tour of the West Main St. redevelopment area

Martha Cull will lead us on an architectural walking tour of the area around West Main Street and describe some of the area redevelopment initiatives.

 

6:30 p.m. -ACSA Welcome/Reception

AASL members are invited to join their ACSA colleagues at the Brown-Freeman Theater for the ACSA Opening Address/Welcome to Louisville. 

 

Saturday, March 15, 2003

 

Saturday's program will most likely take place on the University of Louisville campus. Bus service is available to the University of Louisville campus. Transportation options will be included in the AASL program packets.

 

9:00 a.m.- 10:45 a.m - Space planning and architecture libraries: successes, issues and lessons learned from the field- J. Brown, E. Byrne and J. Connorton - brief speaker presentations and open discussion

 

Jeanne Brown is the Architecture Studies Librarian at the University of Nevada at Las Vegas. Her Architecture and Building web site was a groundbreaker and remains the metasite for the discipline.

 

Elizabeth Bryne is head of the Environmental Design Library at the University of California at Berkeley. Elizabeth is active in both ARLIS and AASL. Elizabeth hails from Louisville.

 

Judy Connorton is Chief of the Architecture Library at City College in New York City. She is Past-President of AASL and active in ARLIS/NY.

 

10:45 a.m.- 11:00 a.m. Break

 

11:00 a.m.-12 noon- Tour of the University of Louisville Art Library - Gail Gilbert

Gail Gilbert, Head, has graciously invited us to tour the Margaret M. Bridwell Art Library, located on the first floor of the Schneider Building, University of Louisville. The Art Library has significant resources in architectural history.

 

12 noon- 2 p.m.- Lunch on own/ Visit to the Speed Art Museum

Enjoy lunch at the café in the Speed Art Museum, located very near the University of Louisville Schneider Building. The Speed Museum has a fine collection of over 13,000 works of art. Exhibits at the Speed Art Museum will include a special show on museum

architecture.

 

2:00 p.m.- 4 p.m.- Tour of Old Louisville- Tom Owen

Tom Owen, an archivist at the University of Louisville, is a local historian and city councilman. He will take us on a lively tour of this historic neighborhood, which borders the University of Louisville.

 

6:00 p.m.- AASL Group Dinner at Vincenzo's

Vincenzo's is located at 150 South Fifth Street, corner of 5^th and Market, within walking distance of the Seelbach Hotel. Cuisine is Northern Italian. Michael Graves designed the interior of the restaurant. Cost is $25.95 per person plus 18 % gratuity. Tax is also extra. Drinks are not included in this price.

9:00 a.m.- Meet in hotel lobby

We will be traveling on a yellow school bus to a number of interesting sites around Louisville.

 

9:30 a.m.-10:30 a.m-. Tour of Farmington- Carolyn Brooks, Executive Director

Farmington is a 14-room Federal style house built between 1815 and 1816 for John and Lucy Fry Speed. It is based upon designs by Thomas Jefferson. In 1959, Farmington was opened to the public as the first house museum in the Louisville area.

 

10:45 a.m.-11:45 a.m.- Lunch at Masterson's

We'll be stopping at Masterson's for their lunch buffet. Cost is $12.00 per person tax and drinks included. Charge is $11.25 for seniors. Masterson's is located at 1830 South Third Street, not far from the Kentucky Derby Museum. Enjoy a final chat with your AASL colleagues.

 

12:00 noon - 1:00 pm. - Tour of the Kentucky Derby Museum

The Kentucky Derby Museum is on the grounds of Churchill Downs. The Kentucky Derby Museum includes interactive exhibits, art works and related artifacts.

 

1:30 p.m.- 2:30 p.m.- Tour of Locust Grove

Locust Grove, which dates from around 1790, was home to William and Lucy Clark Croghan. George Rogers Clark, the Revolutionary War hero, resided here for a number of years. The youngest brother was William Clark, who explored the Northwest Territory.

 

Return to hotel by 3:30 p.m.
