XML (Extensible Markup Language) is rapidly becoming the single
most important standard for encoding structured data, including
documents, database records, and metadata. This workshop will
introduce XML to visual resources managers. We will: show where XML
fits into the world of metadata; introduce its structure and syntax;
present examples of XML encodings of metadata, including MARC, Dublin
Core, and the proposed XML standard for VRA Core; demonstrate tools
for authoring and editing XML; and illustrate the transformation,
indexing, and searching of XML on the server. Workshop participants
will complete a brief exercise marking up a simple document.
