We throw them away. I've also tried selling them at our booksale for a
dime apiece, or a dozen for a dollar. While everyone oohed and ahhed
over them, few bought. Sometimes I foist them on our Education
Department, but they rarely seem to want them. It's funny, even
though I suggest cutting them up for art projects, etc., most people
seem horrified at the idea - go figure. I've also had booksale
patrons tell me they were going to frame them as is. The decision to
toss them was made long, long before I ever started working here.

Back in December, Andrei Codrescu read a commentary on NPR's All
Things Considered show in which he (quoting from the NPR website)
"hurls invective at libraries that remove dustcovers from their books.
He sees this as a violation of literary dress code, much like the
general public wearing T-shirts these days." I happened to hear it on
my way home that day and it was hilarious. Hearing him say, "do they
paper their modest homes with them?" in his Romanian accent is truly
memorable. Thanks for the reminder to order the transcript. (I found
it on the NPR.org website by searching for "codrescu.")

I am collecting information about what art libraries do with book
jackets.

Do you through them away?

Do you catalog them separately and house them in flat files?

Do you keep them on the books and cover them with mylar?

Do you keep them on the books in certain circumstances such as when
the
content of the book jacket is not represented within the book?

I would appreciate any and all responses and thank you for your time
and
help.

Best to you,

Deborah Perotti
