PROGRAMS - * Celebrating the Life and Work of Steve Abbott 1 December, Sunday, 2:00 Main Library, Lower Level, Latino/Hispanic Community Meeting Room The 10th anniversary of Steve Abbottıs death is honored in commemoration of World AIDS Day. His daughter Alysia is joined by friends Kevin Killian, Dodie Bellamy, Bob Gluck and others in this celebration of Abbottıs poetry and prose. * Felice Picano leads a personal tour of "Early Gay Presses of New York" 14 December, Saturday, 3:00 Hormel Center, 3rd floor. Renowned writer of fiction, poetry, memoir, and plays, and a member of the legendary Violet Quill Club, Felice Picano will be in the Hormel Center to speak about his experiences in gay publishing. This event is in conjunction with the exhibit "Early Gay Presses in New York," curated by Picano from his personal collection of books, drawings, photographs, correspondence, and other rare materials documenting this seminal period of gay publishing. In 1977 Picano founded SeaHorse Press, the premier gay publishing house in New York City, and in 1981 co-founded the Gay Presses of New York of which he was editor-in-chief for twelve years. Picano also helped launch the Publishing Triangle Association, the lesbian and gay publisher organization based in New York. ******** EXHBITIONS - on view through January 9, 2003 James C. Hormel Center, Third Floor, Main Library: * Gay Presses of New York (1977-1995) - Documenting the beginnings of contemporary gay publishing, this exhibit includes books, drawings, photographs, correspondence and other rare materials from the private collection of Felice Picano, a renowned award-winning writer of fiction, non-fiction, poetry, plays and literary memoirs. Picano was a member of the legendary Violet Quill Club founded in 1977 to promote gay writing. * Celebrating the Life and Work Steve Abbott, 1943-1992 Selected from the collections of the Hormel Center, an exhibit of artwork, writing, and photographs by Steve Abbott, the San Francisco-based poet/writer who died of AIDS in 1992.
