Arcadia Director of Library and
Archives Philadelphia Museum of Art
The
Philadelphia Museum of Art seeks a highly qualified individual to take on
the leadership of the library, the slide library and the Museum archives,
with collections numbering more than 150,000 volumes and including several
special collections and departmental libraries, 150,000 slides, and 1500
cubic feet of archival materials. The Museum’s libraries and archives are
poised on the verge of an important physical expansion into new quarters
in a renovated landmark building, which will also house important art
collections, exhibition galleries, study centers and museum staff
offices. The successful
candidate will work closely with Museum administration and Trustees to
develop and amplify the library’s resources, and, over the next six years
the Arcadia Director of Library and Archives will be responsible for the
planning and development of the new spaces, and the oversight of the move
from the current location.
Additional responsibilities include: supervision of day-to-day
library operations including provision of reference and research services
in support of museum staff and associated scholars, and a very active
interlibrary program; library collection development and management with
particular regard to the strengths of the museum’s holdings and curatorial
programs; management of library and archives budget; supervision of 4
professional staff and 3 FTE para-professional positions; oversee library
and archives volunteer program; act as primary liaison to the Museum’s
library Trustee committee, the Board of the Philadelphia Area Consortium
of Special Collections Library, and to the Research Libraries Group; work
with the Museum’s Development Department in securing special project
funding; and develop new programs that maximize use of library resources,
staff and technology.
Qualifications:
MLS from ALA-accredited library school; advanced degree in art history or
humanities; and reading knowledge of French, German or Italian
preferred. Experience: 5-7 years professional experience, ideally in
an art or museum library.
Demonstrated leadership and interpersonal skills; ability to work
as part of team. Flexibility and versatility required for work in an
evolving environment. Involvement in professional
organizations. Excellent written and oral skills. Competitive
