Minnesota libraries, museums, and other research institutions are
actively developing digital image collections to improve access to visual
resources, and as a supplement to preservation programs. The development of
online
image collections, however, represents an enormous investment on the part
of these institutions. To ensure that the investments yield maximum
returns, the visual resource collective of Minnesota must determine the
needs of potential users, identify the content they want and construct the
access and delivery mechanisms most suitable to their needs. Minnesota's
libraries, museums, historical societies and other research centers serve
many different audiences, and all can benefit from the exchange of ideas
and experiences regarding the development of sustainable, relevant digital
image collections.

MINERVA (Minnesota Electronic Resources in the Visual Arts) is a
symposium that fosters cooperative sharing of ideas, expertise, and resources
among institutions building or considering online image collections. Spurred
by the success of last year's symposium, the MINITEX Library Information
Network, the MAGNOLIA/Minnesota Digital Library, and the University of
Minnesota Libraries are pleased to sponsor MINERVA '02. The one-day
event will be held at the University of Minnesota Libraries' Elmer L. Andersen
Library on Thursday, November 7th, 2002. MINERVA '02 progresses from
last year's theme of creating and managing digital collections, to a focus on
defining and meeting user needs.

The first half of the program will feature presentations by local and
national leaders of electronic resources in the visual arts. The second
half of the program will assemble MINERVA attendees into four breakout
sessions on topics including user access, standards, content development,
and consortial projects. The sessions will be led and moderated by experts
on each of the topics of special interest. MINERVA attendees are
encouraged to indicate on the registration form a preference for a
particular session.
