------------------------------
Hi everybody! The Visual Resources Collection/Slide Library at the Department of Art and Art History at Stanford is pleased to host the VRA-Northern California chapter, ARLIS-Northern California chapter, and the Museum Computer Network California chapter joint meetings on Friday, November 15th.

The highlight of this meeting is a presentation of LUNA Insight by David Rumsey, President of Cartography Associates, San Francisco, and Director of Luna Imaging, Los Angeles.:

The Digital Image Database: A New and Powerful Tool for Libraries and Museums

This presentation will show how new developments in database software have greatly expanded the uses of digital image databases for Libraries and Museums.  With these new tools, image databases can be used for e-learning, exhibitions and lectures, scholarly research and collaboration, and collection management and development.  The speaker will demonstrate these concepts using the online AMICO Library, and art image database of over 100,000 objects that he is distributing for a consortium of major North American and European museums, http://www.amico.org, as well as images from the award winning David Rumsey Historical Map Collection,http://www.davidrumsey.com, which contains more than 1.5 terabytes of visual information.  Software demonstrated will include Insight by Luna Imaging, ArcGIS by ESRI, search visualization tools, image watermarking by Digilock, and others.  Sharing, combining and cross searching of online databases from different institutions is now possible and will be demonstrated, showing how we can combine materials from the above two databases with databases from universities such as Yale and Stanford.  Also discussed will be the development of online shared archives such as the Open Archives Initiative, integrating image databases into Library online catalogs, opening database structure to commercial search engines for greater public access, and future software developments that will enhance the power of librarians and curators to manage these digital resources and fully integrate them into the goals and programs of their institutions.
