The following question has been posed by a curator at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art:

The relationship between the artist and curator in commissioning a work of art seems to be governed only by convention. Are there any industry guidelines or critical, theoretical, or philosophical works that speak to this relationship?

We've already consulted the major reference databases--BHA, ABM, Art Abstracts and Design and Applied Arts Index--the AAM website, and the literature on corporate sponsorship. Isn't there some official statement and reflection on this issue?

Thanks,

Nancy
