UCSD Libraries Receives $850,000 from Mellon
Foundation to Support Digital Media Initiatives
The
University of California, San Diego (UCSD) Libraries has received
$850,000 in grants from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to support
strategic digital media initiatives. The two-year funding will
support the cataloging of art images and their deployment in digital form
for educational purposes.
“We are
very pleased by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation’s support,” said
University Librarian Brian E. C. Schottlaender. “ These initiatives
will significantly advance our goals of developing rich and sustainable
digital collections and infrastructures in support of enhanced
information services to UCSD faculty and students.”
In
carrying out the initiatives, the UCSD Libraries will partner with the
Fine Arts Library at Harvard University and the Ingalls Library of the
Cleveland Museum of Art to create a prototype Union Catalog for Art
Images (UCAI). As the core of an expandable catalog, UCAI
will bring together approximately 500,000 metadata records describing art
works and other images that were created at the three partner
institutions in different systems using different standards.
For the
prototype database, the aim is to achieve the broadest possible thematic
coverage with the minimum degree of overlap. UCSD and its partners will
attempt to address the technical issues surrounding the unification and
display of diverse record structures and content, to assess both the
viability and utility of database. After the prototype is created,
additional features will be developed for UCAI in subsequent phases of
the project.
In
addition to the creation of the UCAI prototype, the initiatives will
result in the digitization of a significant portion of the UCSD
Libraries’ substantial slide collection. The digitized collection
will be added to the expanding suite of Mellon-funded ArtSTOR collections
supporting teaching, research, and scholarship, and will be available to
UCSD faculty and students via the campus network to support teaching and
learning in art history and related humanities fields.
