Dear colleagues:

The Queens College Art Center is pleased to present the
exhibition Nineteenth – and Twentieth – Century Art of
Spain and Latin America. Prints, Photographs, and
Drawings from the Collection of Jerald R. Green. The
exhibition opens on September 5, 2002 and may be
visited until October 24, 2002. A reception is scheduled
for Tuesday, September 10, 2002, from 5 – 7pm in the
Art Center. A gallery talk, to be given by Prof. Green, is
scheduled for Tuesday, September 10 at 5pm, also in the
Art Center. The exhibition is supported, in part, by the
Department of Hispanic Languages and Literatures, Prof.
Emilio DeTorre, chairperson. The Art Center hours are
Monday – Thursday, 9am-8pm; Friday, 9am-5pm.

Prof. Green’s collection is the product of extensive
travel throughout the Spanish-speaking world. This
exhibition showcases a limited selection of Prof.
Green’s collection of the art of the Spanish-speaking
world which he has been acquiring for almost forty years
and which he routinely draws upon to enhance and inform
his Spanish-language classes. Many prints and
photographs were acquired on the occasion of Queens
College Art Center exhibitions. Others were purchased
directly from the artist or from a gallery representing a
particular artist. Still others were acquired online or at
auction. The significance of the prints and photographs
derives from their aesthetic qualities, their historical
importance, their technical mastery, or their cultural
value.

Embedded within the collection are several important
sub-collections: (1) Social Realism prints which
emerged from Mexico’s Taller de Grafica Popular
(Popular Graphics Workshop); (2) social protest prints
from Spain’s Estampa Popular, a print collective which
challenged Francoist Spain; and (3) nineteenth-century
albumen photographs of Spain and Latin America.

The Art Center is located on the 6th floor of the
Benjamin S. Rosenthal Library, at Queens College.
