Dear Colleagues,
Following is an announcement about the ARLIS/NA and VRA Joint Task Force on
Continuing Education. Please excuse any cross postings.

ARLIS/NA-VRA Summer Institute for Visual Resources

In early 2002 the Art Libraries Society of North America and the Visual
Resources Association created a Joint Education Task Force to develop and
implement a weeklong summer institute for continuing education in image
collection and visual resources management. The Summer Institute will cover
such topics as fundamentals, collection development and management in both
analog and digital formats, budgetary procedures, staffing and personnel
issues, leadership and management skills, metadata and data standards
including the VRA Core Categories for Visual Resources, new technologies,
copyright and intellectual property rights.

The Institute, which is being developed as a standardized program that will
be repeatable and sustainable, was to have been hosted by Rice University in
Houston, Texas, in July 2003.

In order to provide adequate time to develop a curriculum, engage
instructors, and seek outside funding through granting agencies, the
ARLIS/NA-VRA Joint Education Task Force has recommended to the ARLIS/NA and
VRA Executive Boards that the proposed Summer Institute for Visual Resources
be postponed for one year. The Institute will be rescheduled and planned
for June/July 2004, and still held at Rice University for its first venue.

Attendees of the VRA annual conference in April 2003 in Houston will be able
to experience first-hand the opportunities the city has to offer, as well as
visit the nearby Rice University campus, and can plan on a return trip to
the Bayou City the following year for the Summer Institute for Visual
Resources.

Information about the Summer Institute will be posted regularly. Any
additional queries can be directed to the co-chairs of the Task Force:
