Hi, Diana and Vicki:

I'm the Head Librarian at the Atlanta College of Art. Together with my MLIS
I have an MA in Art History. Yes, it helps, but with a studio degree you
were probably required to do academic courses as well and that might just be
the right mix, depending on the type of library you work for. Certainly, in
an art and design college, there are times that I wish I had a studio
background -- technical terms, processes, etc. If you want to beef up the
art history side of things, perhaps a survey course might be suitable.

As for the pending retirement of art librarians: I don't know if there are a
huge number retiring, but certainly the next few years will show some shifts
in the field. There's already been a number of retirements over the last
several years.

All the best,

Moira

"As a career-changer and library school student very near completion ...I am

professionals retire?"

Coincidence! I am also about to finish the MLIS degree at Kent State. I
was
just about to write and ask about the importance of getting a second
master's
degree in Art History. Is it crucial? Could I get started at an art
library
without it? Would it matter if I had a degree in Studio Art instead of Art
History?

I'm interested to hear what everyone has to say regarding Vicki's questions
and hope that you can answer mine as well.

Thanks,
