Special Collections Manager
Biltmore Estate


Biltmore Estate, an historic site in Asheville, NC, is seeking a Special
Collections Manager to oversee the archives and rare book library of
Biltmore House.  Archival collections include manuscripts, landscape and
architectural drawings, and historic photographs.  The library contains
23,000 volumes.

Reporting to the Director of Museum Services, the individual in this
position is responsible for processing, cataloguing, preservation,
acquisition, research, and reference of Biltmore Estate's special
collections.  The incumbent will supervise two full-time staff members and
work closely with other members of the department including curators,
registrars, historians, and conservators.

Required Qualifications:  MLS or MA in History with an archival
concentration (or related degree) and a minimum of five years of
progressively responsible professional experience including successful
management of an archives/special collections unit; previous supervisory
experience; knowledge of archival theory and methodology; excellent
interpersonal skills and ability to work as a team member in a diverse
environment; computer literacy and knowledge of database administration and
descriptive standards for archives and libraries (such as USMARC and EAD);
demonstrated research and communication skills; experience acquiring,
organizing and providing reference services for special collections;
budgetary responsibility; and a record of commitment to professional
development.  Must be able to climb ladders and stairs and lift boxes
weighing up to 50 lbs.  Previous museum/historic site experience preferred.
Salary based on qualifications.
