AVAILABLE POSITION DATE: July 31, 2002 TITLE: Visual Resource Specialists / Art Department Non-exempt, Regular, Part-time, 22.5 hour/week Working under general direction of the Head of the Art Reference Library, performs tasks connected with the Visual Resources part of the Art Reference Library. Assists in other tasks connected with the professional operation of the Art Reference Library. Reports to the Head of the Art Reference Library. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Formulates and enters records into the slide and photograph data base, using the modified Harvard-Fogg slide classification system, the Art and Architecture Thesaurus, the Yale Center for British Art Subject Headings, the Union List of Artists' Names, and the National Museum of American Art's Authority List of Artists' Names. Acquires, catalogs, labels, and binds slides and photographs. Organizes and retrieves material from the uncataloged slide and photograph backlog. Responds to special requests from the curators and research assistants. Supervises volunteers working on the slide and photograph collections. Processes and organizes auction catalogs and sales information. Prints Christie's price lists from the Internet. Prepares bindery shipment approximately every six months. Maintains a list of missing issues. In processing gifts of books or periodicals, searches Innopac, BAS, and card catalogs of the Main Library and ARL for duplicates as well as RLIN for cataloging records. In cooperation with the Head of the Art Reference Library, provides orientation of new readers and supervises volunteers. Assists in answering questions and in locating books in other libraries for scholars. Helps organize ARL collections and supervises volunteers working with them. OTHER FUNCTIONS: Other duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS: Degree in art history or related field preferred. Technical understanding of programming and applications of library/museum computer systems, such as Innopac, dbase, etc. essential. Knowledge of slide/photograph cataloging and classification systems and conservation/storage methods essential. Knowledge of Library of Congress methods, such as cataloging rules desirable. Must be able to work independently with little or no supervision. Must be tactful and courteous and efficient in managing time, meeting deadlines, and coordinating works. Must have 3 years experience in an academic or museum art environment.
