FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Cynthia Stow 615-269-3868 Two-Day Symposium Offers Unprecedented Look at Contemporary Art NASHVILLE, TN. (June 28, 2002) - The Frist Center for the Visual Arts in Nashville, TN., will be the site of a two-day symposium on November 1-2, 2002, titled "Care of Contemporary Art: Who Decides?" The educational event will bring together regarded professionals in conservation,, law, art and museum studies to address the complexities of contemporary art. The symposium will be the first of its type and depth in the region to focus on contemporary art. "Each profession plays a critical role by bringing a unique expertise and approach to the care of contemporary art," stated Christine Young, program coordinator. "This symposium will be an extraordinary opportunity for experts in the field to connect, share and exchange information on the multi-layered arena of contemporary art." The two-day symposium will be divided into two sections. The first day, Mark Golden of Golden Artist Colors will lead a materials workshop on the technical issues and aging characteristics of acrylic paints. The second day of the symposium will be led by nationally recognized professionals in the contemporary art field, who will deliver engaging presentations on the latest findings and issues in the subject. The faculty includes art historian, Kimberly Davenport, Director of the Rice University Art Gallery; Jay Kreuger, Senior Conservator of Contemporary Art of the National Gallery; Ann Garfinkle, a Washington attorney specializing in art law, copyright and trademark issues; and Adrienne Outlaw, Nashville artist and reporter, The symposium will conclude with a panel discussion among the entire faculty. The symposium is organized by the Southeastern Regional Conservation Association (SERCA) and the Midwest Regional Conservation Guild (MRCG). Attendance for the symposium is open to individuals from all fields, including collectors, but seating is limited. The symposium cost is $50, with discounts for qualifying students.
