MONTICELLO'S JEFFERSON LIBRARY IS NOW OPEN

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The Jefferson Library, a 15,500-square-foot facility
devoted to the life, times, and legacy of Thomas Jefferson, is now open, and
the "Thomas Jefferson Portal" online catalog has been launched. The catalog
is built on Endeavor's "Voyager" integrated library software with worldwide
access at <http://tjportal.monticello.org/>.
The Thomas Jefferson Foundation, Inc., the nonprofit organization that owns
and operates Monticello, hosted the official Dedication ceremony, on April
13, the 259th anniversary of Jefferson's birth. Comments were offered by
U.S. Sen. George Allen, Gov. Mark R. Warner, and University of Virginia
President John T. Casteen III. Keynote speaker was historian and author
David McCullough, winner of the 2002 biography Pulitzer Prize for "John
Adams." Selections of Mr. McCullough's comments may be viewed at
http://www.monticello.org/streaming/speakers/librarydedication.html.
The library contains shelf space for 28,000 volumes, a special collections
room, a central reading room, two conference rooms, an informal "common"
room, a multimedia center, and 20 offices, including those of the editorial
staff of "The Papers of Thomas Jefferson: Retirement Series." The facility
also features high-speed Internet connections throughout the building.
The Jefferson Library is open to the public, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday
through Friday, and electronic reference services are available. For more
information about services and resources, visit the Library's web site at
http://www.monticello.org/library/index.html.
