Since 1968, member consensus has contributed to the definition of the public art gallery as a "non-profit public institution that collects, preserves, and/or interprets, exhibits, and researches to advance the cause of visual arts." During this important focus session, and proceeding from the common definition of the public art gallery, we will examine the status of the public art gallery project in 2002. How do public art galleries chart their own paths today? Has the role of the public art gallery changed in the face of a shifting community, altered economy, or new systems of content delivery? How have our institutions negotiated shifts in funding priorities? Francine Périnet, Director, Oakville Galleries, will address the topic of the session from the point of view of the public art gallery director. Robert Windrum, Curator/Director, Gallery Stratford, will discuss the development of the municipal public art gallery in close proximity to another major cultural institution. Kelly Hill, Research Manager, Ontario Arts Council, will present a summary specific to public art galleries in the 1999/2000 financial year. Terry Smith, Assistant Deputy Minister of Culture, has been invited to discuss current Ministry structure and vision with respect to public art galleries. John Brotman, Executive Director, Ontario Arts Council, will speak to the role of council funding and public art galleries. Steven Smart, Osler, Hoskins & Harcourt, will speak on the topic: The Public Art Gallery and the Cultural Review Board. Gary Hall, President, Artist-Run Centres and Collectives of Ontario, will review the parallel development of artist-run centres in Ontario over the last thirty years. We will be inviting all registrants to complete a worksheet exercise during the session drawing upon their own financial statements for the past ten years. The 2002 OAAG Awards follow the day's proceedings at the Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery, Harbourfront Centre, at 6 p.m. Please join us.
