>Edith was a long-time member of ARLIS/NA, and a dear colleague to me at
Temple University.  I am saddened to forward the news of her passing last
Sunday, 6/16/02.

I have included a copy of the death notice from the Philadelphia Inquirer
below.  There is an additional note below for anyone that may be coming to her
memorial service.

Death Notices

Edith Hampel

HAMPEL EDITH (nee Baker) of Rittenhouse Square, a long time resident of
Philadelphia, died of cancer on June 16, 2002. Mrs. Hampel had a 60 year
career as a reference librarian and worked for the last 30 years at Paley
Library of Temple University where she served as head of the Reference
Department, among other posts. She retired at age 83 in February 2000. During
her years at Temple University, she served for over ten years as a member of
the Executive Committee of the Temple Association of University Professionals.
Mrs. Hampel was born in Panama on January 31, 1917, to Donald Baker and Sarah
Evangeline Weeks Baker. Her father was an exporter of exotic tropical woods.
After spending her childhood in Panama, Mrs. Hampel received a BA from
Bucknell University in Lewisburg, PA. and a master of Library Science from
Columbia University. During her career as a librarian, Mrs. Hampel also worked
at The University of Pennsylvania Libraries and at Time Incorporated Editorial
Research Library in New York. She lived for many years on Panama Street in
Center City. Mrs. Hampel was an avid follower of the arts and volunteered as a
weekend guide at the Philadelphia Museum of Art for over 25 years. Her
nurturing warmth, lively intelligence and joyful spirit will be missed by her
family and many friends and colleagues. She is survived by a nephew, Donald B.
Huff of New Baltimore, MI and two nieces, Christine H. Fewell of
Hastings-on-Hudson, NY, and Edith H. Willoughby of Merritt Island, FL. Mrs.
Hampel was predeceased by her sister, Antoinette Baker Huff and a niece, Toni
Huff. A memorial service will be held at The Church of the Holy Trinity at
1904 Walnut Street at Rittenhouse Square on Saturday, June 29 at 11:00 AM.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Friends of Rittenhouse Square, 150
Summit Ave., Upper Darby, PA 19082 or the Church of the Holy Trinity.

A memorial service for Edith Hampel will be held on Saturday,
June 29 at 11 am at the Church of the Holy Trinity at
1904 Walnut Street at Rittenhouse Square. There will be
a reception at Edith's apartment following the service to
which all are invited.  Please let anyone who would be
interested know.
