EMILY CARR INSTITUTE OF ART + DESIGN CONTINUING STUDIES SUMMER INSTITUTE ON BOOK ARTS July 22 – 27, 2002 A contemporary book arts program offering varied studio opportunities for both the practising artist and the beginner. - Artists’ Studio for Contemporary Book Arts - Basic Bookmaking - Introduction to Letterpress - Introduction to Bookbinding The one-week Artists’ Studio is available to practising artists. Under the mentorship and guidance of internationally recognized artists, you work on personal projects with the Institute’s resources at hand. Discussion, critique and peer reviews provide stimulus and creative energies. Artists may select to work under one of the following: - Celia King, artist and faculty at Emily Carr Institute of Art + Design - Elsi Vassdall Ellis, artist, owner of EVE Press, and faculty at Western Washington University - Kathleen Walkup, artist and Program Head of Book Arts at Mills College A project proposal is required. Basic Bookmaking, Introduction to Letterpress and Introduction to Bookbinding offer beginners a series of workshops on the fundamentals of creating artist’s books. Evening presentations (no preregistration required) include Michael Carrabetta, Creative Director of Chronicle Books; Elsi Vassdall Ellis and Kathleen Walkup. Institute letterpress resources include a Nolan proof press, 2 Vandercooks, a Ketterson movable bed, three antique presses and an embosser. Digital resources include printing, scanning, G4’s and I-macs.
