Virginia Commonwealth University

Virginia Commonwealth University, School of the Arts, Branch Campus in Qatar

VCU-Qatar College of Design Arts will become a formal branch campus of Virginia Commonwealth University in July 2002, leading to new administrative and academic positions (including art library positions).  The College began offering courses in 1998, primarily taught by VCU faculty, leading to U.S. accredited BFA degrees in Interior Design, Fashion Design, and Graphic Design, a general education program, and adult extension courses to students from the Gulf region and other countries.  VCU School of the Arts is ranked among the top 20 art and design programs in the U.S. and maintains identical standards for VCU-Qatar.  A focus of the College is the education and award of professional design credentials to women in support of Qatar's initiative to integrate women into the economic structures of the economy.

The College has an 80,000 square foot state-of-the-art facility in Doha, the capital city of Qatar.  VCU-Qatar is the first college established by the Qatar Foundation for Education, Science, and Community Development in the country's new Education City.  Cornell University's Weill Medical College will open adjacent to VCU-Qatar in September 2002.  Additional specialized colleges operated by other U.S. universities will be opening over the next several years.

Qatar is one of the most liberal and progressive of the Gulf countries and has offered a very hospitable environment for our male and female personnel.  Doha is a modern city with many western influences and a population of more than 250,000 of which 50% are expatriates.  Approximately 4,000 U.S. citizens live and work in Qatar.  English is the standard second language.  The VCU campus has the strong support of the U.S. Ambassador to Qatar and the U.S. Embassy considers Qatar among the safest countries in the world for Americans.

The following positions will be available as of 2002-03.  These offer extremely competitive international salaries and benefits, including housing, travel, and other support.  Appropriate graduate degree or equivalent professional experience required.  Qualified applicants who seek a challenging and rewarding overseas career opportunity and have a record of achievement appropriate to VCU are invited to apply for the following positions:
