ART LIBRARIES JOURNAL

This quarter's Art Libraries Journal (vol.27 no.2 2002) has been edited by Peter Trepanier (National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa) and Renata Guttman (Canadian Centre for Architecture, Montreal). It is a special issue entitled Revealing impermanence&and tackles that vexed question always facing art librarians: how to ensure that ephemeral information of use to future generations is identified and retained.

Contributors from the UK, the United States, Canada and Finland discuss topics ranging from timelines in art and art history, to the ways in which exhibitions and festivals are recorded. Cirque du Soleil's documentation activities are described, with their growing history of the company's performances; so too are two quite different archives which document impermanent art. A maker of artist's books explains what makes him collect objects and why they appeal to him. The opportunities the digital environment offers are explored. Even that unwelcome task that art librarians so unwillingly carry out - weeding their stock - is explored. And there are also a couple of surprises.

This issue of the ALJ also includes the Bibliographies update for 2002, as well as an assessment of the report on the VISOR I project by Henry Pisciotta, and a review of Clive Edwards' Encyclopedia of furniture materials, trades and techniques by Gregory P.J.Most.

Copies can be ordered from Sonia French, 18 College Road, Bromsgrove, Worcs. B60 2NE. Price is $26 per copy, including the cost of surface mail ($24 to ARLIS/UK & Ireland members).
