                                Bulletin #2
                         Springtime in the Rockies
                ARLIS Canada/ARLIS NW Regional Conference
                          Banff, Alberta, Canada
                    Friday 31 May - Sunday 2 June, 2002

Flying into Calgary International Airport you will see panoramic views
of the modern city's highrise buildings, the Calgary Tower,
(www.calgaryview.com/calgarytower/170thatalbph04.html), and to the west, the
snow-capped Rockies. Heading further west to Banff on the Trans-Canada
Highway, take particular note of the ribbon of road bisectng the landscape
as it climbs the foothills - it is a view most favoured by our
quintessential prairie artist, the painter Illingworth Kerr (1905-1989).

Lisa Christensen, author of A Hiker's Guide to Art of the Canadian
Rockies, our dinner speaker on Friday, will discuss other well-known artists
who were captivated by our mountains, among them several members of the
Group of Seven. Banff and the Rockies were a particular lure for artists in
the 20s, e.g. wildlife artist Carl Rungius
(www.glenbow.org/arthtm/rungius.htm), who maintained a studio in Banff
and made annual hunting trips to the area for many years; Catherine Robb, of
Boston (www.whyte.org/collection/artistlist.html#4), who married Banff
native Peter Whyte, after whom the Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies is
named. Those of you who saw the wonderful Sargent exhibition in St.Louis
may have noticed a 1916 watercolour, Camp at Lake O'Hara, which was painted
while Sargent visited the Rockies. Apparently the rustic accommodations
made such an impression on the well travelled artist that he chose to paint
his tent instead of the spectacular scenery.

Your accommodations at this conference will be much more civilized,
at the Banff Centre (www.banffcentre.ab.ca/facilities/accom/), a year-round
conference centre/campus for art, music, and performing arts, known for its
arts administration seminars, and original productions of plays and opera
during the summer.

For more about the conference program, and registration forms, see:

Deadline for registration: 12 April, 2002
