The Smithsonian American Art Museum is pleased to announce the publication of the Spring 2002 issue of American Art. This issue of the museum's academic journal (vol. 16, no. 1) includes the following articles:

"American Criticism in a New Century," a package of short essays by Eleanor Heartney, Peter Plagens, Mario Naves, and Arthur C. Danto;

"A Critical Medium: James Jackson Jarves's Vision of Art History" by Charles Colbert;

"The Dark Cat: Arthur Putnam and a Fragment of Night" by Alexander Nemerov;

"An Interview with George Tooker" by Justin Spring;

"Jackson Pollock's 'Galaxy'" by Kirsten A. Hoving;

"Remembering Roger Medearis" by Virginia M. Mecklenburg.

American Art is a peer-reviewed periodical published three times per year, in March, July and November. Articles may encompass any aspect of America's visual heritage, including the fine arts, popular culture, photography and electronic media, public art, architecture, and the decorative arts.

An abridged electronic edition of the new Fall issue can be found on americanart.si.edu/journal. It includes additional educational components and interactive bulletin boards for posting comments on many of the articles. Information is also available online about subscriptions, single-copy orders, and submissions.
