Miniature books
Lead Pencil (2002). The stub of a pencil is evocative of many thoughts and
emotions: scrimping and saving, making due with what you have, being in
elementary school, public libraries, government offices, taking tests...
There is a Hungarian born sculptor, Andras Borocz, who is known for using
pencils in his art work. Finding they shared birthdays led Peter to
explore
using pencils as construction materials and content for his own books. The
concept for Lead Pencil was generated after making several one of a kind
and
small edition books dealing with pencils. The cover is a color photocopy
on
handmade paper made directly from pencils and pencil shavings. The text is
letterpress printed on raised painted panels and a graphite colored wooden
structure holding a used elementary school pencil is placed along the
spine.
This edition was made as a birthday book so there are 45 copies, in
keeping
with our tradition of birthday books. 2 x 2 3/4 inches. $75.

Mineral King/Kern Loop (2001). A summer backpack trip Donna took in
Sequoia
National Park, a beautiful region of the southern high Sierra, was
inspiration for this book which documents the trip in a free verse poem
accompanied by eight watercolor illustrations. There are twenty-four
accordion pages, printed with color photocopy on Peter’s handmade paper,
and
bound in a unique open case binding (developed by Peter & Donna) using
Peter’s handmade paper. 2 1/8 by 2 1/4 inches. 40 copies. $48.

Accordion to Zither: a musical ABC (2002). This alphabet book presents 26
of
our favorite musical instruments in watercolor illustrations by Donna
Thomas.
This book has thirty accordion pages copied in color on Peter's handmade
paper. The open case binding is covered in sheet music created by Donna on
Peter’s paper. 1 7/8 by 2 3/8 inches. 100 copies. $52.

A larger book:
In the summer of 2001 Donna took a backpack trip with her friends Heather
McPherson and David Worton through the wilderness of the northern boundary
area of Yosemite National Park, walking some of the same trails California
poet Gary Snyder wrote about as he walked and worked there years before.
After returning from her trip, Donna heard Snyder read from his journals
and
was struck by the fact that though peoples responses to urban landscapes
have
drastically changed over the last fifty years, nature has remained a
constant. Even though years separated the two trips, nature still
presented
the same physical challenges and inspires the same emotional responses.
On the trip, Donna painted eleven illustrations. Heather kept an
insightful journal. David, after being home awhile, put his ideas about
our
place in nature into essay form. Donna then took all these elements and
wove
them together, using calligraphy and colored inks, on Peter's handmade
paper.
Donna's paintings were mounted on the pages and the trail, with it's
features
of lakes, streams and mountains, was drawn across each page. The ten pages
were color photocopied and woven together using handmade paper straps
through
each left hand margin. The book was bound with linen cloth over boards, a
painting is inset on the cover, and it rests in a slipcase constructed of
handmade paper over boards. Fifteen copies. 6 1/4 by 8 1/4 inches. $250.
Please add $15 for insured postage.
The original calligraphy and art work for this edition has been bound in a
special one of a kind book. The front cover is a relief map of the areas
Donna hiked, carved in balsa wood then covered with leather. Colored
leather
onlays were used to indicate the lakes and rivers of the region, the trail
is
marked and the title is painted on the cover using acrylic paints. The
original illustrations are sewn onto the pages using colorful embroidery
threads. The book rests in a clamshell box with leather spine and Peter's
handmade paper covers. One copy. 6 1/4 by 8 1/4 inches. $950
