Image Databases Librarian / Manager

Otis College of Art & Design Library is committed
to launching several image databases over the next
few years. We are currently beta-testing the
Madison DID software and building a brand new
image database which will entirely support
teaching art history with digital images over the
next 3-5 years. With support from a Getty
Electronic Cataloging Initiative Grant, we are
hoping to begin digitizing our Artists' Books
Collection. We are also planning to purchase
Content dm software to use for digitizing the Otis
Archives, Gallery Archives, and student and
faculty work for the Otis website. Pilot test
projects in these areas are planned and 3
full-time interns will work on scanning and data
entry during summer 2002.

This professional will provide leadership and
vision for these projects, beginning immediately
with developing and implementing a strategic plan
for the phased migration of appropriate parts of
the slide collection to digital format, while
maintaining accessibility of the slides for users
who need them. She/he will administer standards
for image and data quality, coordinate production,
maintain and conserve the digital images, as well
as implement a program to train and support
faculty using the DID software for Fall 2002.

She/he will work within the Otis Library as part
of a team of 5-6 full time professional librarians
and paraprofessionals who are responsible for
coordinating all library services to faculty and
students. This job focuses in the area of the
Visual Resources Center, and requires the ability
to relate well to faculty and students while
enforcing necessary policies. A portion of the job
involves staffing the Visual Resources room and
supervising student workers and other staff.
She/he will also handle collection development
related to videos, DVDs, and CD-ROMs, as well as
licensing digital images and image database
subscriptions.

Required: MLS or MA + relevant experience and/or
coursework in databases, web technologies, visual
resources. Salary range: $35,000 - $45,000
depending on level of education and experience.

Sue Maberry, Director of the Library, will be
attending the upcoming St. Louis conference and
may be able to arrange a meeting. If interested,
please contact me directly.
