Monday, March 25
11:00 am-12:30 pm
Seminar IV: Buried Treasure: Artists' Files in the Digital Age
Moderators: Erika Dowell, Indiana University, and Terrie Wilson, Michigan
State University
Artists' files are perhaps the greatest un-tapped resource in art libraries
today. These files can be an invaluable resource for biographical
information, exhibition history, and images; they are a particularly rich
resource for information on local and regional artists. This session will
begin with short introductions to different strategies for bringing the
"buried treasure" in artists' files to light. Speakers' topics include:
adding records for artists' files to an OPAC, using the RLG Cultural
Materials Initiative to assist with a digitization project, digitizing slide
collections of local, regional, or faculty artists, developing a low-tech
web-based database of artists' files, and post-implementation issues for
online artists' files. We hope that the discussion that follows the
speaker's presentations will reveal a variety of projects and perspectives
to inspire institutions of all sizes to make their artists' files available
to a larger audience.
Participants:
Ann B. Abid, Head Librarian, Ingalls Library, The Cleveland Museum of Art
Kathleen Adrian, Assistant Curator, Visual Resources Collection, History of
Art Department, Johns Hopkins University
Sam Duncan, Associate Librarian, Amon Carter Museum
Thomas Jacoby, Retired Art & Design Librarian, University of Connecticut at
Storrs
