Position: Fine Arts Librarian
Cornell University seeks an experienced, creative librarian to lead its
Fine Arts collection development and reference program. The Fine Arts
Library supports the research and instructional needs of a renowned
faculty and a dynamic, culturally diverse student body in degree programs
in architecture, fine arts, city and regional planning, art history,
history of architecture, landscape architecture, design and environmental
analysis, and historic preservation. Holdings include more than 180,000
volumes, 1200 current serial subscriptions and a wide range of visual and
digital resource material. While continuing to emphasize the importance
of traditional formats, Cornell is a recognized leader in digital library
development and actively committed to the support and promotion of
digital collections and services, including expansion of its consortial
endeavors with museums and other fine arts collections. As an integral
member of Cornell's newly formed Division of Instruction and Learning,
Research and Information Services (IRIS), the Fine Arts Librarian will
actively participate in developing and incorporating innovative services,
approaches, and technologies designed to meet the changing needs of
faculty, students, and other constituents.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Fine Arts Librarian is responsible for
administering a materials budget of $200,000 for collection development
of the subject areas served by the Library; providing high quality and
innovative reference assistance; working closely with faculty to develop
effective instruction services; fostering relationships with donors; and
collaborating locally and nationally on digital initiatives. In building
new relations with the museum and fine arts community, including the
Johnson Art Museum and the music and performing arts programs at Cornell,
the incumbent will be able to develop creative, new programs designed to
meet the challenges of the 21st century, serve current and new
constituencies, and support the library's role as a primary information
provider. All librarians at Cornell must promote effective relationships
with colleagues, their respective campus constituencies, and appropriate
donors. They must also actively participate in professional associations
and/or carry out research and publication in their subject field.
Requirements: M.L.S. or equivalent graduate degree. Subject expertise
and/or an undergraduate degree in one of the following areas: art or
architectural history, architecture, fine arts, arts administration,
historic preservation, or planning. Successful teaching and/or library
instruction experience. Awareness of national and international issues
and trends in collection development and public services in art and
architecture librarianship and information technology. Expertise in the
scholarly literature and basic bibliographic and reference tools in Fine
Arts and related fields. Demonstrated ability to contribute to the
promotion of digital initiatives and to new models of reference service
and collection building. Ability to work independently and
collaboratively in a rapidly changing environment. Excellent oral and
written communication skills. Professional contributions through
innovative library/museum initiatives, professional and scholarly
associations and/or relevant publications.
Desired: Five or more years of progressively responsible professional
experience in an academic or research library, preferably specializing in
Fine Arts. Graduate degree in one of the above disciplines highly
desirable. Background in related fields in the humanities or social
sciences. Reading knowledge of one or more Western European languages.
Advanced training or direct experience in applying digital technologies
to the discipline especially welcome.
