You are sitting underneath a gilded, arched ceiling...stained glass, striking woodwork, and soft lighting surround you. Gershwin and Joplin music sparkles in the background. When you join us at the ARLIS/NA-VRA 2002 conference, allow us to take you on a trip to St. Louis past, as you join your colleagues at the "Meet Me in St. Louis" Welcome Party in the magnificent Grand Hall of Hyatt Union Station. At this cocktail reception, mingle with your colleagues, congratulate our travel award recipients, enjoy fine hors-d'ouevres, and sip a classic cocktail from a cash bar. Generously sponsored by the historic Saint Louis Mercantile Library and ARLIS/NA-VRA regional chapters, this welcome party will bring all of us together to mark the beginning of our exciting conference. And this is just the beginning.

On Saturday evening, join the bidding frenzy as you participate in a silent auction of fantastic items created or donated by ARLIS/NA and VRA members. Following this, we encourage you to attend our conference banquet, an event which promises fine dining and equally fine talk as Daniel Greenstein, Director of the Digital Library Federation, gives our conference keynote address "Visual Information in the Next Generation Digital Library." We think you will enjoy this new spin on the ARLIS membership luncheon, at which you will dine on the Hyatt's lauded cuisine while absorbing cutting edge insights into how libraries can best from the analog to the digital environment.

After Sunday's exciting conference programming, what better way to celebrate than at the conference Convocation, held at the Sheldon Concert Hall and Galleries. Designed by the renowned 1904 World's Fair architect Louis Sperling, and built in 1912, the curved wood theater of the Sheldon Concert Hall has seen the likes of Albert Einstein, Ernest Hemingway, and Joan Baez. But it has yet to see the likes of the ARLIS/NA-VRA membership! Let's put our mark on the place and gather to celebrate the distinguished service, research, and writing awards for both organizations. Following the awards presentation, we will proceed to the Sheldon Art Galleries, where you will find heavy hors-d'ouevres (spring rolls, anyone?), cash bars, and a view of the lights of the city. A great chance to converse with old friends and new, the convocation is the ideal prelude to the final gathering of our conference.

The "30/20" Anniversary Party! What do we mean by 30/20? Well, we're glad you asked, for it makes us proud to announce that VRA is celebrating its twentieth year, and ARLIS/NA its thirtieth! We have members younger than this, so this is a professional accomplishment indeed! To honor this event, we have planned a very special party at The City Museum for our members. Please come and play with us at St. Louis' most vibrant and unique downtown attraction that includes a multi-level enchanted forest, a giant aquarium, architectural museum, and galleries of oddities. A chance to step back into time and into your childhood, we just hope that you aren't feeling too young to enjoy the catering of Patty Long, St. Louis' finest. Pear and gorgonzola tarts, cucumber rounds with salmon mouse, PASTRY SWANS WITH CHANTILLY CREAM!!!!!! We're stopping now before we need to run out and buy ourselves a snack!

We encourage you to browse your preliminary conference program and register for any or all of these events, either on-line or on-paper. The Welcome Party, Silent Auction, and Convocation are free to all.just tell us that you are planning on attending. The Banquet and Anniversary Party are fee events, but we hope we've convinced you of the enjoyment these fees will bring! As always, we looking forward to "meeting you in St. Louis!"
