Error - unable to initiate communication with LISTSERV (errno=10061, phase=CONNECT, target=127.0.0.1:2306). The server is probably not started.

In response to benefits of an open listserv -- I am a grad student with an interest in art librarianship. Being able to join the listserv, read the messages and getting a handle on what ARLIS is about was the spark that moved me to join the organization itself. So for that reason an open list really is beneficial.
