Dear colleagues,
It is great sadness that I report that Bill Bunce, former director of
the Kohler Art Library,
died at home on February 23 from a heart attack. Bill was a beloved
member of ARLIS/NA for many years. He was an inspiration and role model
to many University of Wisconsin library school students and an admired
colleague and friend to many librarians across the country.
Bill was a student of philosophy and art history at the UW-Madison in
the late '50s and earned a library of science degree in 1961. He served
as art librarian on campus from 1966 until his retirement in 1999. When
the Kohler Art Library opened in 1970, he designed the layout of the
library and chose the comfortable and elegant furnishings. He
introduced the first compact shelving to be used on the UW-Madison
campus.
Over the years, he built one of the finest university art library
collections in the country. He established the much-acclaimed artists'
book collection at the UW-Madison and formed close relationships with
many book artists throughout the world. An inspiration to many students
using the collections at the Kohler Art Library, Bill said, "I believe
students have a richer learning experience if they have hands-on
involvement. It's one thing to read about a gorgeously bound,
hand-printed book on handmade paper and quite another to handle it."
An amazing individual with a tremendous enthusiasm for life, Bill will
be sorely missed by many friends and colleagues.
A funeral service is scheduled for 10:00 am, Saturday, March 2, at St.
Luke's Episcopal Church, 4011 Major Avenue in Madison. A memorial
service on the UW-campus will be held later this spring. Next fall the
Kohler Art Library will hold a general memorial that will celebrate
Bill's life and his contributions to the University. Arrangements for
memorial contributions are still being made.
