Bienes Center for the Literary Arts (Ft. Lauderdale, FL)

is pleased to announce the exhibition:

FLORIDA, THE MAKING OF A STATE: A CARTOGRPAHIC ADVENTURE: January 17-March 28, 2002

Comprised of approximately 47 maps and other printed pieces dating from the late early 1600s to the 1930s, the exhibition graphically traces the discovery and colonization of the New World territory known as Florida. 

The Library of Congress, the Broward County Historical Commission and several private South Florida collectors have loaned maps to the exhibit.

In addition to the main theme, four subcategories deal with the creation of Broward County (Ft. Lauderdale, FL), dredging and drainage of parts of the Broward County and the Everglades, waterways and boating and the Seminole Indian Wars.

Several related programs are scheduled during the run of the exhibition:

"Collecting Antique Maps: An Introduction"

February 28, 2002 ¯ 7:00 p.m.
Rodney E. Dillon, former head of the Broward County Historical Commission
"Ft. Lauderdale from the Beginning: A Discussion of Historic Ft. Lauderdale"

A four-color exhibition catalog with an essay by Ralph E. Ehrenberg will be available for $15.00 after February 15, 2002.
