Well said Moira. I don't believe this is intentional on the part of various
ARLIS/NA EB over the years or ARLIS/NA members in general. We are a fairly young
organization -- only nearly 30 years old. We now have the fine networking of
ARLIS/NA liaisons to professional library and art organizations. I think that we
are not placing enough energy on making our organization a known factor in the
library world however and a part of that is our small numbers. I moderated a
session several years ago on our professional image. One of the speakers I got
for the session was the PR Director of ALA and she had never heard of us. I
think it is a "side effect" of being small in number and, therefore, political
voice. ALA is staffed by full-time paid staff; ARLIS/NA has its HQ office whose
employees serve other organizations in addition to us. Power and voice are
usually held by the people / organizations with the big bucks.

I do agree, however, that we should strive to do more to inform the library world
about our our existence and purpose. This is becoming even more important as
libraries of all sorts make more images available!
