One advantage of a student chapter is the opportunity to participate in
activities on a university level. For instance, UT Austin has an
excellent pool of art, architecture and VR folks right there that
students could more easily connect with through chapter activities.
Plus, there are always lots of university-wide activities that could
potentially serve as venues to make connections and bring new blood into
the art/architecture library profession. I believe student chapters
would encourage participation in state and regional chapters
rather than act as fractured subgroups.
We could at least set up some guidelines for students interested in
starting a group. Otherwise, state and regional chapters could
start doing outreach to their area library schools - as Ray Anne has
pointed out. As it stands, students have to have lots of initiative
(strangely enough - most people are really shy about approaching ARLIS
members), or already have a connection with art librarians in order to
get involved.

I think it would be great and better if students participated in ARLIS/NA
regional chapters instead of forming another subgroup, further fracturing
the profession. It is so great to talk to other librarians and make those
connections and learn about real life challenges. They put on excellent
programs too! I am sure all of them would welcome the new participants
ideas and contributions! We are stronger together than apart. PH
