Greetings, First thanks to all of you who sent suggestions to us on this subject. Others asked that I summarize the responses for you which I am doing here. I would like to say that one of my former co-workers created "Images: a guide for finding pictures of all kinds" which has an extensive section on "Online Sources...a selection". It seems that, at this time, there is no real online "subscription service" that replaces the rounded, useful picture files we have created over the years. As I mentioned in my request, we already subscribe to the AP Photo Archive which is helpful for news events, celebrities, etc.. We are scheduling a trial subscription to AMICO which will partially replace our reproduction files and subjects such Madonnas, Bible.OT.Adam and Eve, and Bible.NT. Nativity. And we may try purchasing CD-ROMS to replace parts of the general collection. Following are the responses from our ARLIS collegues. We are reviewing them and will look back at them as time passes. I've just copied and pasted the messages along with the sender's name. Don't I recall that the Library of Congress has photographs and illustrations mounted on its site? Also, the new project of the Research Libraries Group, the Cultural Materials Alliance, is building a collection of digitized images that is available by subscription. Ann I have a Web page called "Finding Images on the Web" at: http://www.bu.edu/library/training/webimages.htm that you may find helpful. You will need to look at conditions of use statements on the home page of any site you want to take a picture from. However, your patron is a school kid needing a picture of George Washington (etc.), I don't think there would be a problem. Ruth I am in the midst of planning a bib. instruction session for t'mow morning,so I will answer you quickly. Please see a guide I prepared a few months ago on searching for images on the web. You can find it at: http://www.lib.uconn.edu/Storrs/visualimages.pdf Hope this helps. Ellen CathY: Try to get a demo from the Luna Project, now working with the ArtStor. I have seen 2 demos. One at yale concentrated in American art, or American owned art, portraits of the important "fathers of the Nation" The were able to zoom on details of the jewelry and the rings. The second demo by the ArtStor was about a temple in Tibet, they digitazed the whole room, even behind the Buddha. One could see in great detail all the minute work on the walls. The Luna is up and running. You might get their address yhrough the ArtStor webpage. Regards, gladys Again, thanks to all of you who responded to our request.
