I haven't followed the "Art in Fiction" exchange much; 'apologies if this
is obvious or outside the context of the query.

Edith Wharton's novella False Dawn (1924) has a father sending his son to
Italy in order to purchase renaissance art. The son returns with
disappointing results and a discussion about what art should be ensues.

Another great book is Le Divorce by Diane Johnson

Although I have not yet read this, I've enjoyed other Pamuk novels and this
one seems particularly relevant today.

Orhan Pamuk, My Name is Red. Translated from the Turkish (Knopf, 2001)

The waning Ottoman Empire of sultans, court miniaturists, and Venetians is
the context. For a review see the NYTBR or Christian Science Monitor's Oct.
