Dear Colleagues,

   I received a distressing letter (see attachments) fom the head of the
Belgian Royal Academy of Arts and Sciences, L=E9o Houziaux, that I would
like to share with all of you. M. Houziaux is concerned that the Prime
Minister of Belgium,
Guy Verhofstadt, has unilaterally announced his intention to take over
the beautifully preserved Neo-Classical building dating from the mid
1820's that is the headquarters of the Royal Academy.. The building has
served as the seat of the Royal Academy for over 125 years and M.
Houziaux warns of irreparable damage to its pristine interior should it
be converted to office space.  Furthermore, I view this as an act of
cultural barbarism illustrating a complete disdain for artistic and
intellectual institutions within Belgium.  This type of savaging of
cultural institutions should not go unchecked.  Therefore, I am asking
for your assistance.

  I hope you will join me in printing out the attached =22Manifesto Pro
Academia=22 and in circulating it as widely as
possible to our colleagues in the United States. Please sign aind return
