Dear Linda and fellow ARLIS members:
At one time I had this series of annotated reprints, edited by Faber Birren, enclosed in the publisher's cardboard slipcase. (I may still have the slipcase somewhere, as I sold them individually). Although they were undoubtedly available from the publisher for purchase individually, I assume that one could have purchased the volumes as a set as well.
The Yale University Art Library has Faber Birren's collection of Books on Color, presented by Mr. Birren in 1971. The Yale Art Librarian Nancy Lambert mounted an exhibition of selections from the collection in 1982, in conjunction with which she published a bibliography of 673 books and items in the collection. The Yale University Library Gazette also published a scholarly article on the Birren collection with annotations on examples in the collection. I vaguely remember Mr. Birren coming to the Yale Art Library to do research and to arrange for the gift of his collection. It is a great resource for those interested in the history of color.
