Hi, Trudy: We collect DVDs here in the Atlanta College of Art Library. Our policy for these and for videotapes, though, is in-library use only. We provide students with a TV/VCR/DVD player combo (as well as our screening room if not booked for a class) and they may watch what they want from our collection there. On rare occasions a student or, more likely, a faculty member will be allowed to take out a film overnight, but there haven't been too many requests. We've been collecting only a few things -- mostly classics for a Liberal Arts film history class (e.g., Metropolis) or specialty items. I've found that only a few titles on subjects of interest to use are currently available on DVD, still mostly VHS. We deal mostly with Facets, Films for the Arts and Humanities and PBS, but I've never seen much dealing with graphic art. So, if you get some responses with suggested distributors or titles in graphic arts, please share with the list. Thanks. I have a question for you now. One of the Art professors I work with specializes in graphic design and is interested in acquiring DVDs in the library for his students to use. Has anyone bought DVDs to support art curricula yet? Are you checking them out to people? Is there a good distributor or producer out there you can recommend? I don't see a lot of discussion of the format in the library literature yet, though I have found the Journal of Academic Librarianship articles, and some Peter Jasco columns on particular products. Any information or experience you can share would be welcome. Thanks in advance, Trudy. Trudy de Goede Reference Librarian Calvin T.
