Thank you to all, some forty-eight libraries/librarians, for the time you took to offer insight into the standard full-time work week. You advised me as to the numbers of hours of work required. Most of you took time to give a brief description of the type of library for whom you work. You often provided as to whether your hours had changed recently, your experience with other libraries, and personal reactions. Again, thank you. As promised, here's a break down of my findings. (Remember this is not a comprehensive survey. It was voluntary. One survey participant noted that in 1999 ARLIS did s similar survey and received 252 resposes.) No. of libraries responding: 48 types of libraries: government/ government related: 3 university/large college: 19 smaller college: 14 museum: 8 private organization: 3 required hours: mean hours: 37.5 hrs median: 37.5 hrs hours by type of library (number of libraries reporting their data): university/medium college: 38.4 hrs (19 reporting) government/government related: 38.3 hrs (3 reporting) smaller univer./college: 37.5 hrs (14 reporting) museum: 37 hrs (8 reporting) private organizations: 35 hrs (3 reporting) hours by geographic location (with numbers of libraries reporting): west: 39 hrs.
