Sara--
         It sounds like Albert Pinkham Ryder, who died in 1917.
He painted more like 160 works, and especially toward the end
of his life reworked some of them so much that now many are in
poor condition.  There was an exhibit of his paintings in 1989
(12 years ago -- that's close!) at the National Museum of
American Art (now called the Smithsonian American Art Museum).
         Ryder definitely influenced Richard Diebenkorn and
Marsden Hartley, and is given general credit for influencing
the Abstract Expressionists.  I cannot find anything about
his having been such a beacon to Rauschenberg or Johns, though.
